Washburn Valley
North to South
Washburn Valley is located in the UK, close to the town of Harrogate. It’s only 14 miles in length, stretching from just south of Greenhow down to Wharfedale, but contains a variety of landscapes: open countryside, moorland, meadows and woodlands. The River Washburn threads through the valley, its flow controlled by four reservoirs: Thruscross, Fewston, Swinsty and Lindley Wood. The valley is overlooked by Stainburn Forest. Its natural landscape belies the centuries of human impact upon it through farming, past industry, forestation and the reservoirs. The impact of the reservoirs on the landscape fascinates me. The once continuous v-shape valley, now broken up by four huge plateaus of water, which have submerged lanes and fields and the village of West End. This work aims to, eventually, give a sense of this place and what means to me as a place of refuge.
